(9/17) After introducing Cause and Effect, students in Mrs. Hodum's class were able to create cause and effect relationships in small groups and illustrate their sentences.

(9/13) Mrs. Roe's fourth graders enjoyed "Flashlight Friday." This is a fun way to encourage reading!

(9/13) 3rd graders enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Debbie Edge who read her book “A Piece of Abner’s Heart” to conclude our study of 9/11 this week. Thank you, Mrs. Steele for setting this up for our students!

(9/11) Mrs. Kirk's third grade math students are beginning to learn multiplication concepts using equal groups and repeated addition.

(9/10) On Sunday, September 7, Pontotoc City School District held its second annual EL graduation ceremony. Students were recognized for passing the LAS Links English Proficiency Test. This test measures English Learners’ ability to read, write , speak, and listen in English. Students must score a four or five on the test to pass. At the ceremony, the students received certificates of achievement and a treat. Pictured are Mrs. Rachel Chrestman with current fourth grader, Joshua Rodriguez, and former D.T. Cox students, who are now fifth graders, Mariano Huerta, Uriel Gutierrez, Michelle Alegria, Andrew Martinez, Dario Perez, Alesandro Quiché, and Emmalyn Montes.

(9/10) Mrs. McNeal's students participated in a Reader’s Theater to introduce the elements of a Drama (RL.4.5).

(9/6) Mrs. Hilliard's third grade gifted students continued their study of the brain with various activities to challenge their skills! First, they took part in the Stroop effect quiz. Students were instructed to color a "color word" with a different color than what it read. Then, students had to try and read their partner's list (the color, not what the word said) as quickly as possible. It was harder than it seemed! Students also put together a brain puzzle, and created their own puzzle showing the lobes of the brain. Last, students made "brain hats" that showed the different lobes of the brain, and what processes they were responsible for. Students also took part in explore time, where they were able to build, create, and imagine utilizing various manipulatives.

(9/6) Staff and students had a BLAST at our AR kickoff this morning! If you are wondering what AR is, it's Accelerated Reader. This program promotes reading in a fun and exciting way! Students will have individual reading goals for each 9 weeks. If their personal goal is met, there will be AMAZING REWARDS!!

(9/6) Mrs. Brown’s 4th grade students enjoyed music science day! Students participated in various soundwave experiments. The class was able to listen to a tuning fork to hear sound wave vibrations up close! Tubular sticks were used to determine which direction a sound wave was coming from. Glasses were filled with water and students were encouraged to experiment to change the pitch of the glass when it was tapped. In addition, students were able to visualize sound waves as they tapped a drum and the vibrations made the clips dance in the air!

(9/5) During science class, Mrs. McNeal's students broke into small groups and completed a digital water cycle escape room.
