International Dot Day!
(9/15) To celebrate International Dot Day, 3rd grade UFO students read the inspirational story, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds. It tells of a young girl who is discouraged in the beginning of the story, and then inspired by a little encouragement, creativity, and imagination from others. Students then learned about the artist, Wassily Kandinsky, and his abstract art. After viewing the print, Squares with Concentric Circles, students learned what concentric meant, and then created their own watercolor and oil pastel concentric circle piece. Students utilized their math skills by measuring and sectioning off their paper accurately, and then connected the lessons taught from the story, and the historical information about the artist and his style by creating their own "dots" and concentric circles in their masterpieces.
